According to this website, they feed on other insects. Therefore, the only useful purpose they could possibly have on this earth is pest control. ;)

The Wasp was a small, gas-turbine, shipboard anti-submarine helicopter. It came from the same program as the British Army Scout and was based on the earlier piston-engined Saro Skeeter. It fulfilled the 'MATCH' (MAnned Torpedo-Carrying Helicopter) requirement of the Royal Navy for a helicopter small enough to land on the deck of a frigate and carry a useful load of two homing torpedoes.
and without the creature where would the coptor have got it's cool name?

and Daddy Longlegs!! I hate those things, they make this wierd clicky noise on the walls! They sneak up on you when you least expect it and drag those legs over your skin! Both wasps and Daddy Longlegs come out in August, I hate August!! It's the hottest month of the year and all the windows and doors have to be tightly locked to stop them getting in but they still manage it!! My husband and son think it's hilarious when I drop to the floor and crawl out of the room screaming 'get it, get it'! They haven't heard it, can't see it and just think the whole thing is a huge joke although they do catch them and put them outside or they would get no peace from me!! If wasps do feed on Daddy Longlegs then GO WASP, but I hate them too.

"Wasps are critically important in natural biocontrol. Almost every pest insect species has a wasp species that is a predator or parasite upon it. Parasitic wasps are also increasingly used in agricultural pest control as they have little impact on crops. Wasps also constitute an important part of the food chain."

The wasps role in life is to zig zag in front of your face then make several fast dives towards your ears in order to bring you into a panic that you're going to get stung.
They actually do sting you when you least expect it. They're just toying with you most of the time.
Beware them most in late August/ early September because (believe it or not) they get old and grey and even more cranky.

Cute...I'd like to know where fire ants fit in! They are evil, evil, evil. Of course all creatures have a purpose and fit into the balance of nature.

Somewhere above the mosquito, that's for sure!
I suppose birds who eat bees and other insects need to have something to eat...
