My mom works thursday, friday, and saturday night, and monday, friday, sunday afternoons at a restaurant. She just started the night shifts a couple weeks ago but after that she cannot sleep! She used to be able to sleep heavily. She also drank warm milk at night and she said that helps a little, but what would make her sleep better she asks?

It may take a while for your mom to adjust to her new work schedule. I do have some suggestions for what they're worth:

1. Avoid caffeine -- especially before bed. If possible, she should cut it out about 8 hours before she goes to bed.
2. Avoid eating heavy meals before going to bed. Make the last meal a light meal.
3. Take a relaxing bath or shower. A bath maybe preferable. If she has any lavender bath gel or bubble bath, use that. Lavender is good for relaxing and soothing.
4. Try deep breathing- maybe even some yoga exercises. I am not referring to the different positions, but to the breathing.
Check out a yoga DVD or tape from the local public library. Be sure there are deep breathing exercises on it. Try that.

Good luck!

Tylenol Pm or any other over the counter sleep medication may help. There are also lots of thing that don't require medicating herself. Sleepytime teas, reading, a glass of wine soft music, heavy duty shades in the room.
Sounds like your Mom has a very busy schedule. Her sleep cycle is all messed up. It will take some time for her body to get used to this if this is going to be her normal work schedule.
I don't reccommend using sleep medication unless she gets to the point that she can't function. There are also some medications her doctor could prescribe for her.
I hope one of these suggestions works for her.

I've had sleeping problems in my past. Tried many things that people said would work... none seemed to help me.

Until...

Go to a health food store and get some dried Rosemary. Put it in a little herb bag and lay it near the nose during the night time.

I did the above and began sleeping better than ever before.

Cheers

Melatonin which is available at any Walmart, Target, most grocery stores, and drug stores, in the vitamin and herbal remedy sections. It is a natural chemical in our brain which helps us sleep and is invaluable in situations as this, or jet lag, etc. She should start with one tablet at the lowest dose, and increase if needed as per the bottle directions. You can easily tell if you are taking too much as you will have very active, vivid dreams. Good luck to her, nothing is more miserable than sleep deprivation!
