Went to the doc to get the "every two years" physical done, and it seems like the quality of care has really gone downhill. Essentially the doc didn't do anything.

Nurse weighed, did blood pressure and pulse. Doc spent about 10 minutes talking about family history, how I was feeling, etc. but never did any type of exam. I asked him about it, and he said that this was the way that physicals were going these days.

Granted, I'm a healthy upper-20's aged guy, so I don't expect anything major done... but even the cheap-o work ones listen to my heartbeat and make me take a deep breath.

So my question is this: is this the way that things are going now? Or is it time to look for a new doc?

Look for a new doctor who will really examine you. You (or your insurance) pay him/her to do a thorough examination, and that involves more than talking. Ask your friends if they have doctors they really think are good. Physicals are supposed to find problems before they are major. The doc you have would not find a lot of conditions that should be uncovered in a routine physical. He's lazy, and his laziness could severely impair your health.

Agree with Maple. A preventative medical exam in your 20's should address early coronary artery disease (ie. knowledge of blood pressure, cholesterol, etc), significant family history of cancers and disease thus mandating early evaluations for some diseases, a review of necessary immunizations for given age (i.e. Tetanus in last 10 years, etc), AND and physical.....particularly as a late 20 y/o is the primary age group for testicular cancer, STDs.

Advice: ask for the recorded note from that visit. A physical exam must be documented in order for it to be re-imbursed by insurance. If he did submit it with saying he did a physical and really did not or in your copy, there was no physical recorded and billing still took place then this fraudulent under our codes and can be subject to HEAVY penalties. Do not quote me here, but something like $10,000 per occurrence!

Hope this helps. Cheers!

I'm a doc. I spend at least 20 minutes performing a physical. That's not the way I do things. Look for a new doc.
