Montréal is a fabulous city - there are museums, parks, a world class botanical garden, the Mount Royal right in the city centre, for family picnics, and short hikes, La Ronde (amusement park), The Biosphere, the Olympic Village, etc. For more information on Montréal, see Taking the kids to Montréal, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11549125/

Well, Montreal IS a very popular destination for 18-20 year-old males, and the places they tend to be interested in are not generally appropriate for children, but as the others have said, there's plenty that is. Club Super Sexe on Ste Catherine Street has quite the, uh, attention-grabbing sign, as do some of the gay strip clubs (around Ste. Catherine and St. Hubert), but most of the city is quite respectable-looking. The casino is actually a beautiful building, not at all tacky, and quite out of the way, so even if you disapprove of gambling, it's hard to think of it as a blot on Montreal's landscape.
Do try to have your kids in bed by 11, after that Montreal does get more rowdy.

I live in Montreal. It is a wonderful place. There are so many things to do with a family here. I should know, I have a young family. There is much more to Montreal than it's night life. So many family activities like the Biodome and Saint Joseph Oratory, Planetarium, all the other museums, not to mention the Canadian railway museum just a 10 minute drive away. And by the way, they have the biggest collection of train stuff in all of North America. All cities have their ups and downs, In my opinion, Montreal has more ups. You just have to plan ahead like for any trip.

Montreal is a wonderful place for just about any demographic.
If I had kids, I would choose a cultural destination like Montreal over the glitz and shallowness of Vegas or Disney any day of the week.

Your friend is wrong . There's plenty of things to do as a family. There are many places to visit like the Biosphere, botanical gardens, insectarium, museum of art, old port of Montreal. Many have activities especially for children. There are outdoor festivals like "Just for Laughs", Jazz festival,etc.. Many families enjoy going out together at these events. Montreal is not just bars and the casino. I've been to Las Vegas and it definitely doesn't compare to Montreal as far as family attractions go.
