You don't have to sympathize with criminals or want them to avoid a terrible punishment to ask if the death penalty prevents or even reduces crime, to look at alternatives and to think about the risks of executing innocent people. 126 people on death rows have been released with proof that they were wrongfully convicted. DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides and isn’t a guarantee we won’t execute innocent people. The death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder. No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in those that don’t. We have a good alternative. Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. It is sure and swift and rarely appealed. Life without parole is less expensive than the death penalty. The death penalty costs much more than life in prison, mostly because of the legal process which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people. The death penalty isn't reserved for the worst crimes, but for defendants with the worst lawyers. It doesn't apply to people with money. When is the last time a wealthy person was on death row, let alone executed? The death penalty doesn't necessarily help families of murder victims. Murder victim family members across the country argue that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative. Problems with speeding up the process. Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person.

You have chosen the more difficult side of this argument. and you have received a couple of incorrect answers. Here is a list of questions about the death penalty system, with answers that are fully sourced. (see below)

Isn't the death penalty cheaper than keeping criminals in prison?
The death penalty costs much more than life in prison. Much of the extra costs is due to the complicated nature of both the pre trial investigation and of the trials (involving 2 separate stages, mandated by the Supreme Court) in death penalty cases. (Esample: New York State- over 200,000,000 to sentence 7 men to death where only 4 have had a single appeal. Annual cost of locking someone up for one year in NY is about 35,000. Compare and do the math. There are more cost effective ways to prevent and control crime.

What about the risk of executing innocent people?
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence, many having already served over 2 decades on death row.

Doesn't DNA keep new cases like these from happening?
DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides. It is not a guarantee against the execution of innocent people.

Doesn't the death penalty prevent others from committing murder?
No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. Homicide rates are higher in states that have it than in states that do not. Most killers don't think about the consequences anyway. They do not think they will be caught (if they think at all.)

So, what are the alternatives?
Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. Supermax prisons are terrible places to spend the rest of your life. Life without parole is less expensive than the death penalty.

What about the very worst crimes?
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??

Doesn't the death penalty help families of murder victims?
Not necessarily. Murder victim family members across the country argue that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.

So, why don't we speed up the process?
Many of the 123 innocent people released from death row had already been there for over 2 decades. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person.

But don’t Americans prefer the death penalty as the most serious punishment?
Not any more. People are rethinking their views, given the facts and the records on innocent people sentenced to death. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole. Americans are learning the facts and making up their minds using common sense, not eye for an eye slogans.

(What and Whatever-lsiten up)
- Cost of maintaining an inmate is only about $30,000 to $50,000 per year depending on the state, I don't know were this $120,000 came from, must be a nice place. Death penalty trials cost an average of 48% more than the average cost of trials in which prosecutors seek life imprisonment. It is actually more expensive to kill someone. With at least 2 lawyers mandatory for most death penalty case, and appeals that go for years it becomes more expensive to kill someone than keep them in prison. also, every month you see people exonerated by DNA evidence and they were on death row. Statistics show that 10% of inmates on death row are innocent, and leads you to believe that we have therefore executed innocent people. There is in all states "Life without the possibility of Parole" which means that inmate will NEVER interact with society again. IF there is even the possiblity of killing and innocent person, don't you think that is grounds enough for a moratroium on the death Penalty? And are we to teach people it is wrong to kill by killing people?

1. The psychological effect it has on future criminals. (But the execution needs to be publicised in order to do this and not behind closed doors)
2. The elimination of a ward of the state. Pay pay medical bills when he gets to be 90 years old.
3. The emotional release it gives the victims family.
4. Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. Letting justice be served.
5. To follow the laws of the US government that are allready in place. When we stop enforcing the law is when people start trampsing all over it. People need to respect our laws.
6. Revenge. Make him feel the same pain that he gave others.
7. To silence the evil and hateful words a murder might try to spread from behind bars.
8. He might try to intimidate others or run his crime organization from behind bars.
9. To set an example.

The death sentance should be re-introduced for paedos and murderers, because these are the two most horrific crimes that can be commited in my eyes and the DNA facilities in todays world is so advanced they cant possibly be wrongly convicted can they? An eye for an eye in a murderers case, and for commiting a crime in the other case and taking a childs innocence away from them just deserves the worse punishment you can give them!!!!

A better way to write you paper is to look at why almost every first world country in the world opposes the death penalty, and focus on why Europe with a history 10 times greater than the United States of America has banished the death penalty, and looks upon it as barbaric.

i support the death sentance, if u want to take a life then be prepared to give ur life! Plus, to shelter and feed an incarcerated murderer cost millions upon millions of taxpayers money. In Nepal, they will cut a theif's hand off, if they catch him stealing, so i bet there isnt a whole lot of stealing going on there...
It is the law of nature to only kill to feed and shelter one self, but not to do it for any other purpose

1) The convicted "person" murdered another out of anger, and viciousness
2) Usually the convicted "person" has a mental problem, and cannot be cured of it
3) Many times, the convicted "person" has slaughtered, and abused children, sexually, and physically
4) The convicted "person" still claims innocence, even after a DNA test, proving their guilt, and therefore taking no responsibility towards their actions.
5) The convicted "person" costs tax-payers an enormous amount of money, every year they live in prison, until they die of natural causes, in order to keep them living while We the People, struggle daily to keep our own innocent families fed, and schooled.
It costs a lot of money to send a parents child to College. If Americans stopped paying so many taxes for convicted murderers to live, who cannot be cured from their murderous desires, there would be a lot more money for our children to get the education they deserve, for being guilty of nothing more than wanting to better themselves.
I believe Doctor's and Scientists want to keep these freaks who murder innocent people alive, by the taxpayers means, so they can continue to examine them, in a mental capacity, in order that they can make a name for themselves, and the People who pay the bills, don't count. It doesn't matter to them how much, Americans suffer for their goals.

Good Luck on your paper. I hope you make a difference. More attention should be paid to this issue, than it is. I get angry that folks seem to want to keep these murderers alive, but think it is okay to abort a baby.

To make sure the low lifes are never free to commit the crime again, to make our streets safer, and to make room in prison for lesser crime prisoners. It also gives the victim's family a little closure. It wont bring their loved ones back but it will give them the sense of peace that the criminial will never do it again and that their loved one's life was important.

But if you support the death penalty shouldnt YOU have your own reasons for supporting it. I have supported it for a long time but never needed any one to tell me why. I have always had my own opinions and thoughts about it.
