The answer is yes. it isnt likely to see such a thing in the major leagues because the ball isnt used for more than a batter or 2 plus they stitch major league balls tighter but a used ball that gets hit right on the strings have come literally apart. The actual cover comes off because once the seam is split it unravels very easily. Take a ball and slice a couple of strings then smack it with a bat and you will be able to see how it happens.

yes, my team has baseballs that we use for batting practice, and we have hit the covers off of before.
