An X-ray can cause severe birth defects and developmental abnormalities, especially if the X-ray is taken in the first trimester.
I was pregnant (very early like days) when I had a cholangegram. (not important what it is-pictures of your common bile duct)
Anyhow, the radiation was way more than a few xrays.
No one knew I was pregnant, I was on medication and tested by blood.
They did not take any extra precautions with me in covering my abdomen. And my DD is now almost 3 and she is (knock on wood) healthy!
HOWEVER, from a medical standpoint if you go for xrays every few months like you stated I would speak with your doctor about your concerns!

First off, when having an x-ray, patients of childbearing age will be shielded with a lead apron in the area of the pelvis, in order to protect the ovaries or testes. For an x-ray of the tailbone. if a shield were placed over the uterus, it would also be covering the tailbone, which defeats the purpose of the x-ray.
Secondly, medical imaging radiation is a very low dose today. You should not have any problems due to this.
The site listed below has real questions and answers, with the answers given by qualified medical personnel. Here is an example:
"the radiation exposure from two back x rays will most likely be far below the exposure that can produce birth defects or a miscarriage."

" The uterus dose from the spinal x ray is estimated to be up to 4 mGy. The precise dose depends on the type of machine and techniques used as well as the size of the patient....there should be no concern (of danger to a fetus) below 150 mGy."

When William Conrad roentgen discovered xrays in 1895 it took alot longer of xray exposure to make the xray on the film. With the advent of rare earth phosphors in the 1970s the time that it takes to get an xray has decreased significantly. We now measure the length of time it takes to take an xray in milliseconds. With the new phosphor screen combinations less than 1 percent of the image is actually formed by the xray, the other 99 percent is formed by light. Because of the time differences I wouldn't worry about it. This was only ONE xray, its not as if you have had multiple xrays near the reproductive organs. As an xray tech, we are unable to shield the area that we are trying to xray, so they could not shield the area. I would NOT worry. Next time, always ask for a pregnancy test before you have an xray if you think there is a chance that you could be pregnant. You will be just fine, and congrats on the new baby!

As an x-ray tech if you didnt know you were pregnant, I wouldn't worry and why would they cover your pelvis with a lead apron when they were trying to x-ray that part!!!?
You should be fine, but dont have anymore in that region.
Good luck!

You can't use a lead apron when they are x-raying your tailbone. Chances are your baby will be fine, but talk to your doctor.

I would inform your doctor at your next follow up, and they will let you know whether or not there is reason to worry. They'll probably do a precautionary ultrasound and may draw some blood work.

Chances are that the baby will be fine if you don't get x-rays regularly.

My doctor told me that if you had it done before you knew you were pregnant, you should be fine, the baby as well. Just talk to your doctor and he will reassure you.
