A friend and I are thinking of purchasing two land hermit crabs - one male, and one female. Is it possible to breed them? Somebody I know told me that they will need to spend at least two days together. Is this true? Any other information I should know? Thanks.

XOXO,
Laurie

Definitely not an easy task. They need to have filtered, aerated saltwater as a place to put their eggs, and the baby hermits live in the saltwater for around 8 months before they come out on land.

How long it takes...well, first you'd have to be able to be sure you have a male and female (not an easy task to figure out for a hermit hiding in its shell), and they'd have to be old enough to reproduce.

It is very difficult to breed hermit crabs. You have to simulate the ocean and all types of different things. You can read up on it, but even professionals have a hard time.

No, Species such as Coenobita clypeatus have a 23 year lifespan if properly treated. Some have lived longer than 32 years.
