In the broadest terms, before the war, the country was just starting to emerge from the Great Depression. At it's worst, something like 25% of people who wanted to work couldn't find jobs.
President Roosevelt used the power of the government to gear up the manufacturing capacity of the nation to supply war materials and funded all sorts of scientific research with military applications. (Radar, sonar, artificial rubber, the list is long.)
After the war, the business community turned that manufacturing capacity into a huge peacetime money making machine, providing jobs for hundreds of thousands of returning soldiers and raising the standard of living for the entire nation. Much of the war time products developed from all that research could be adapted for civilian applications. The 1950's were a remarkably prosperous time in American history.
