I've looked in a few bird sites and did not find the bird I saw (even though some were close) It was very brilliant gold. do you think this was just a more vibrant mating coloration?

It sounds like a Yellow-headed BlackBird.
The website below has a LOT of different bird pictures that you can scroll through if that isn't it. Naturally, I can't say what it definetly is without a photo, but at least the website can. It's about half-way down on that page of the many.
