I work for a public library and know for a fact that for teenagers the jobs are limited (in my particular library). The only teens I have seen hired are for shelving positions. All other positions (ie: desk assistants who check people's books out among other things, and obviously librarians) require experience and/or a degree. I think depending on where you live working at your library compared to say working at the local fast food joint is a much better job. Not only will it look better when you are applying for jobs later on, but also the actual experience you get. I don't think it is "hard" to shelve books or any of the other tasks we do and although you do get the occasional annoying customer who complain about fines or something petty, typically library patrons are "regulars" and you will eventually get to know a lot of them.(which is nice!) Here are some of the typical things a shelver or desk assistant does at my library: check books in and out, unpack delivery (books from other libraries that people have requested), repair books and shelve books. Hope this helps answer your question!

I have worked as a volunteer and as a paid library assistant.
You probably don't need experence if you have good references. There is a lot more to learn than what is obvious.
Shelving books and magazines, overdue notices, labeling or covering books is relatively easy but not exactly fulfilling. It is helpful if you have some experience with computers so you can help patrons with finding or reserving a book,or using the internet.Of course you have annoying customers [ in every job!] Some are loud, careless ,destructive, etc. You will learn how to handle problems in your orientation. The worst one I ever had was a guy masturbating in the library; there was an incident on the news where a guy looked himself in the bathroom with someone else's little girl.

There are a lot of jobs at the library. What you, as a teenager, would do would depend on your abilities. You might just end up shelving books, but you could end up running the computer up front and checking people's books in and out. Most libraries will hire people with little experience, but it really depends on the library and what is available. The only way to find out is to apply. It is not particularly difficult, but it can get monotonous and dull. But what beginning job doesn't? It is as good of a job as any, so you may as well give it a shot if you are interested. It is good experience.

As far as dealing with annoying customers, it is the same as anywhere. Treat them with respect, and you will ultimately get respect back. If not, then it is their problem, not yours. Ignore them and do your job, and there is nothing to worry about. That said, I've run into a lot fewer problem customers at the library than I did working at a grocery store or restaurant in my life.

Years in the past I just about lived in my interior of sight library (love analyzing) this develop into nicely before the internet develop into familiar. i began taking my daughter from an extremely early age (6 months)so she additionally has a keenness for analyzing. each and every 300 and sixty 5 days she does the e book analyzing annoying circumstances, attends the countless adventure the libraries carry. i could advise that all and sundry parent enrol their babies at their interior of sight library because it is so useful for babies not purely to inspire analyzing yet all in an attempt to income from the various stuff library could desire to offer those days.
