Take a line, and divide it so that the ratio of the larger part to the smaller part is equal to the ratio of the whole line to the larger part. That is the Golden Ratio, also called phi.

phi = 1.6180339 : 1

Take a stick and break it into two lengths A & B. If the ratio of the original length of the stick (A+B) to the larger piece A is the same as the ratio of the larger piece A to the smaller piece B, then the ratio is the "Golden Ratio". It's the solution to the equation:

(A+B)/A = A/B

or

1 + 1/r = r

where the Golden Ratio A/B = r = (1/2)(1+√5) = 1.618...
