I have four fish, and I was wondering why they don't have eyelids? Can they sleep without eyelids?

Yup they can sleep without eyelids. The primary function of an eyelid is to keep the eye ball moisturised. As a fish lives in water there is no point to an eyelid as water keeps the eye moist

They do have eyelids, its just that its see through.Notice when a fish dies and the eyelid decays, the eyes tend to become dull greyish. That would be the area where the eyelids used to be, the bacteria clogged would expose it.

As for rest, fishes do sleep but it is either they do it in dark caves or crevices or in darkness most of the time. When a fish sleeps, it stays afloat with its fins but at a stationery position at a certain angle of rest.

Some fishes however, are nocturnal and tend to rest in the day while active in the night.

Their eyes don't need to close because they have some sort of clear, protective covering on them. I've heard that some fish sleep, while others don't. Parrot fish rest on the bottom in a secure spot with some sort of mucus envelope around them, while others, like tuna, are constantly on the move. They never stop swimming. Maybe there is something about their nervous system that lets them automatically follow the rest of their school while powering down their conscious part of their brain. They usually swim out in the open ocean, where the only visual stimuli is other tuna.

Yes, they can sleep without eyelids. Most y because many fish don;t sleep in the way we think about sleep. Most don't become unaware of everything going on around them when they "sleep", if they did that in the wild, something would eat them!

Fish never developed the need for eye lids, because they dont sleep. Other animals that live in water but do have eyelids would be animals like turtles which do sleep.
In the case of fish, they simply stop moving and conserve energy.

yes they do sleep. They dont need eye lids they live in water. The only reason we have eye lids is to keep our eyes moist and to keep debris out of our eyes.
