Sure, it's just fine and in fact preferred by many of the fish we keep. Too soft can cause problems with pH though so at least 2-3 dGH and 1-2 dKH is a good idea.

Soft water is great for some fish,Killifishes,Amazon River fish, and some others. Soft water(from a water softener) has more sodium than true soft water and can be hard on plants, but should be OK for fish if the softener is working properly. Soft water from a reverse osmosis system is fine for fish that do well in soft water.(Discus,Angelfish,Neon Tetras, etc.) Soft water is not good for African Rift Lake Cichlids or the livebearers from Mexico and Central America.(Guppies, Platys,Swordtails, etc.)

Soft water is absolutely essential for Discus, Angelfish and some SA cichlids. Also good for most tetras.

All water is ok once conditioned. You can either let it sit open to air for 24 hours to allow the water to "distill" or if you can't wait...like me...purchase water conditioner which works immediately.
