People were so overcome with loss and tragedy that they needed an escape. The screwball comedy combines slapstick with the absurd, and lets the watcher react like a child in a fantasy. They all have happy endings where the hero, who is an ordinary, nerdy guy, gets the girl in spite of enormous obstacles. People identified with him and the hope that fate can deal a wonderful hand.

The depression influenced the screwball era by providing an environment where everyone was in desperate need for a laugh. Hilarity ensued. Why did it end? Like all fads, people simply grew tired of it. With comedy especially, if you do the same thing over and over again, it isn't funny anymore.
