People say this all the time, and I don't know what they mean by it?

Most gigs in the entertainment field start out at night and the entertainers are usually supported by other means such as a job during the day, when they can make enough to live on, they will quit their previous job to devote more time to a career that is taking off.
Example: a singer at a night club is discovered by a record company and signed for a deal.
Such a person would then be able to make a good deal more money than at their 'day job'.
The phrase "Don't quit your day job" is an insult that means that you are not talented.
Example: You are singing to yourself in a park and someone says "Don't quit your day job" it means you are a bad singer and couldn't support yourself by singing.

They say it when you are doing something else really poorly. You are doing whatever it is so poorly, that you should not do it for a living. For example, if you tell a bad joke, someone will say it, meaning you are better off working in the office than becoming a comedian. Or if you are playing basketball and suck, someone will say it, indicating that you will never be a basketball player for a living. Keep the day job.

It's a joke. It means that you are not good enough to do what ever it is that you were doing at the time when they say it. (Example) You were singing a song that you think was good, only they didn't. Then they say "Don't quit your day job"cause no one would hire you for that....

If you are doing something that may earn you some money and some one says that they mean you will still need your day job to make ends meet.

It's a stupid saying that ppl use when you do something that you know and they know you cannot persue. So, don't quit your day job to do something that you cannot do. For an example singing. =] (if you cant sing)

It means what you are doing isn't all that good - or you aren't very good at it. And whatever you are doing now is probably where you need to stay because you'll never get anywhere with what you just showed them.

they mean whatever your "tryning" to do like singing or some other "talent"..you may want to stop it because obviously they dont think your that good.
