Politics has always been interesting to me, mainly because it seems like the masses of people who talk about it have no clue what they're talking about. Where is a good place I can go to study politics in a kind of leisurely way? I don't really think I'd go well in classes or the such. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hmm...I didn't mean that I want to become a politician, sorry I guess I worded my question worng. I want to just merely be able to keep up an intellectual conversation about political issues.

First, make sure you actually understand our system of government at the local, state and federal level. Read your county or city charter, your state constitution and the federal constitution. You can find them on line.

Then talk to people in politics and find out about campaigning, lobbying, constituent service, and how 'the system' actually works within the framework of the guiding documents.

Find out what people care and think about. One of the best places to start is the op-ed and letters page of the Newspaper. Be careful of the blog-sphere, as there is nothing insuring fairness and balance. Most newspapers try to work a balanced perspective on their editorial pages. But don't stop there. Go to meetings, hearings, and join is some interest groups.

Then, pick a politician you like and support and volunteer for their campaign. Work it from the inside.

Then run for office - Water board, Dog catcher, city commission, state rep, governor, congress, senate, maybe president.

And if after all of that, you are still energized and not completely turned off, well consider yourself a politician.

Just learn to lie, and accept bribes, and never do what you say you will. Then you can be a politician.
