If so, do you get them from your change or do you order online/mail? Do you think it would be worth collecting them?

It is indeed a good way to have children learn more about where the states are and a little history as well. Collecting a set from change that is from both mints. (P & D ) is not that easy. If you live in the east you see very few from the Denver mint (D) but they do show up. It is a challange, but will not be worth much more than face value. The guy that collects only the silver proofs is more of an investor than a collector. A collector would get the mint sets, clad proof sets and the silver proof sets. Then they would have a complete set. With the serface of the mint sets changed in 2005 they would also have to get the business strikes from 2005 and up. It is always worth collecting something, if you learn from what you collect. Coins show what a country is all about and even shows the countries good times as well as bad times. You can learn a lot about the world by studing the coins, all the countries have minted over the last 2,800 years or so. Have fun and I hope you put the set together. The uncirculated coins are still reasonably priced if you wish to buy them from a dealer. Buy an album not a folder, coins pushed into a hole with a thumb is not good for the coins.

I collect state quarters through change. It will be worth more than the face value after a while. I choose to get them through change since it can be exciting to not know what you will be getting and getting them by random. Even better than the state quarters, attempt to get the president faced gold colored dollar coins (worth a lot!) though I haven't gotten any of those dollar coins myself (looking for them). They are worth a lot since right now it's George Washington's face on there. Next month it'll be the second president's face and will cancel the Washington one. It changes every three months. Once you get it, make sure u keep it since it will be canceled every three months.

My son collects them - from change only. he puts them in a special map of the us holder he got somewhere a couple of years ago. I don't think they will be worth anything in a financial sense, but it's a great way to teach the kids ...

I'd second that.
My mom actually collects them, as well as my cousin. I believe they just look through everyone's change.
Is it a worthy investment? Maybe in 50 years they will worth more than they face value.
Is it fun as a hobby? Yes, which should be much more of a value than the actual money involved.
