For dogs it can be separation anxiety. They feel alone.
Cats usually are trying to get your attention, mine would want up and have lots of love before he would even eat in the morning.

My dog "crys" when he is scared. I don't know if he sheds actual tears though. There's been a lot of debate over this topic, next to "Are dogs really color blind" They aren't color blind, they just can't see colors as vividly.
But anyways, my dog has been upset and had this look in his eyes like he is crying. (he is a maltese) Then when I pet him he starts to look happy again.
When I first started leashing him he would "cry out". It hurt really bad because I had to ignore him because I was pretty sure he was trying to "fake me out" so I would take the leash and collar off. My dog is really smart. He just didn't want to be led around. He thinks he should be, leader, not follower. But, yeah, I don't know about other peoples dogs but mine cry when they are sad or just plain frieghtened.

Most of them don't shed tears (no tear ducts), but most make some sort of noise to indicate pain or distress. Young animals that are at-least partially raised by their parents usually have a special cry to attract a parent to them if they're separated too long.

yes animals have feelings just as we do.
here is a story for you there is a farel cat that lives in my neighborhood, she had lost her kittens because someone had poisoned them and they all died, she kept going every where crying and crying because she could not find them it took her 4 days to finally stop. i really though she was going to grieve her self to death.
she had a liter again and this time they made it. then i took them in and she did the same thing until i showed her they where ok. so she stopped

My dogs whimper if they are upset, and my one dog who use to belong to my brother cried when my brother died. He actually began howling before I got the call my brother past away. When I went to comfort the dog he had tears in is eyes. He howled everyday at the same time a wee before my brother died and for a week after.
