My best friend is just like that! I think it's probably the movement of the car, and then when certain people are trying to read, they match up the words with the movement of the car. So they think the words are moving, which probably makes them dizzy. Or maybe there's some motion sickness stuck in there, too.
Doesn't happen to me, reading just makes me drowsy!

Riding in cars is not natural for our bodies - our inner ear and our eyes work together to establish balance and a sense of correct-feeling movement. Some people get motion sickness just from being in a car or bus or plane... others only seem to get it when they read, which is common... others don't get motion sickness at all. When some people read while in the car, their eyes and their inner ear sends differing signals to the brain, which often results in dizziness or nausea. The eyes are moving back and forth, expecting the surroundings to be still - the movement of the eyes, with the subconscious expectation of a still environment, PLUS the actual perception of movement in the inner, leads to a confused brain. And nausea. Since it's a chemical/neurological thing, the only way to treat it is the same way you would treat motion sickness. Dramamine or another motion-sickness medicine are available without prescription. Of course, they have side effects, sometimes, so before you drug yourself for something like this, make sure you ask an adult to make sure there aren't any bad drug combos. You shouldn't start taking anything without at least SOMEONE knowing you're taking it - if something happens to you, they'd need to know what drugs are in your system. Hope that helps!

Yup...I get very ill in the car...most of the time without reading or doing anything.
I have noticed that riding in the backseat of cars and vans makes it worse...but I have no idea why. I've been this way since I was a kid and it seems to get worse as I get older.

I don't read while I am driving, its too dangerous, and I don't want to be the cause of someone getting hurt. because I wasn't paying attention when driving.

I do too... it has something to do with your peripheral vision I think. You see the movement in your peripheral and it affects you somehow.
I can read on a plane, but not in a car... weird!
