You could pay a certain amount of money to have an agent. Look around in the newspapers, but don't ever on websites. Go around looking for contests, and try out your talent.
WARNING: Agents aren't your ticket to Hollywood. They trick a lot of people, and millions of people who have good agents don't get into the movie buisness. And it's dangerous too. If they ask to take pictures of you on the spot, don't let them. It takes a long time to prepare for something like this. And don't ever take off your clothes. Another thing, celebrities rely on luck.

YOU DON'T EVER PAY TO GET AN AGENT! The agent gets paid when you do! They get a percentage (usually 10%) of any job they help you get. First of all, you can get a free list from the Screen Actor's Guild of reputable agents, just go to SAG.org. There's also a site called workingactors.com that came from a book called the Working Actor's Guide (they do a new version every year). It's a great book, but the site has much of the info for free! You can look up agencies addresses, send them your headshot, resume & a cover letter (make sure to find out who to send your headshot to - the right person in the right department) and hopefully you will get some calls for interviews! This site will usually tell you if the agency has stipulations on headshot submissions so it's up to you if you want to use your postage, paper and photos taking a chance that this agency may want someone like you even without a referral, etc. If you have friends with agents they like, then by all means now is the time to call in your favors! Use your connections to get the interviews! If you're in acting classes, network with your classmates, ask your teacher who they know! Do what you can to get what you want, but do not bombard the agent's office with calls. They hate that. Good luck!

An agent needs a reason to want to sign you. The reason being they feel you will get work and make them money. Take professional classes. Get all the training and experience you can get. It's not easy to get a good agent. People with years of experience have trouble. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. BTW if you are approached by a "talent scout" get on a bus. They are scams. If you don't live in a big city, there aren't any agents that are real. Simple enough to check the SAG website to see if someone is franchised. If they aren't, stay away.

If you are bent on going Hollywood, go meet people first! In other words - No agent wants to represent a nobody. Get a job in a place where you can be seen by VIPs. (Restaurants are great, just don't ever screw up their order!) You meet people in the most unlikely places. Don't be shy about sharing your dreams of greatness. Someone may know someone! (For example, I teach riding lessons and a new gal moved into our barn. She is an agent from New York and represents her daughter. Her daughter is the little girl in A Beautiful Mind. And I gave her riding lessons, weird.) Anyway good luck - and follow your dreams!

Make sure you have a pretty good amount of experience under your belt before getting an agent. They want to see someone that has had LEAD ROLES in community theater, maybe some on camera experience, taken some classes in acting, singing, etc. Do not ever pay money upfront to anyone claiming to be a talent agent.
