It is difficult to observe chromosomes during interphase because the cell is not yet ready to reproduce. Because of this, it does not yet need the genetic information so it is not visible. All of the preparations are done during the interphase. Interphase proceeds in three stages, G1, S, and G2. Cell division operates in a cycle. Therefore, interphase is preceded by the previous cycle of mitosis and cytokenesis. Since the cells are replicating in the S1 phase (When the cellular DNA has been duplicated, leaving the cell with twice as many chromosomes, the cell moves onto the G2 phase) they are getting ready for reproduction. These cells not yet containing certain genetic information are not visible.
