Ok I'm in Belfast, sister in Glasgow and trying to figure out a problem with her laptop, not easy! Her DVD burner is -R but only plays +R discs (puzzled yet, I'll carry on). Her burner plays 8x DVD+R discs but will not play 16x DVD+R discs. Excuse me for being thick but does it mean that 8x speed burners will only play as high as 8x speed discs?

less of the 'big lad' I'm a girlie lol. She uses Roxio, I've sent her 8x DVD+R discs which play perfectly, sent her a batch of finalised 16x DVD+R and they won't play or even copy to her hard drive. Wondering if her DVD burner/player is a bit fussy!

Sounds like a bit of an incompatibility problem, Some drives only like certain discs, Try burning a 16x at 8x nd see what happens. It's a queer one alright.

I suggest replacing the DVD Drive with something a bit more modern. Check the write-ups in the magazines and get something that's 'universal' (CD-R, & R/W, DVD-R & +/-R/W) = should cost no more than £25.

There is no point in going for latest '64x' speed (or whatever) = reliability is MUCH more important than difference between 2 mins and 2 mins 2 seconds when reading/writing disks

DON'T go for a 'Blu-Ray' or HD drive = these typically have problems even reading CD's & the HD format wars are still not resolved and you will end up paying £100's for something that will give you even more compatability problems
