What is the way in which you typically go about comforting a friend who is hurting?

There is no "typical." Depends on the friend.

I'm typically front-and-center, constant eye contact, supportive demeanor and language. Full listening mode, empathetic response, maybe hand on shoulder or some body contact. If I don't have enough to offer in aid, I ask what I may do to help.

When hurting, I like to be left alone...so I figure that's what others want. I've learned this is not always true and have inadvertently 'abandoned' my friends.

Unfortunately, I am not so good at comforting others. I can barley deal with my own emotions, let alone someone else’s.

I am "there" but I am trying to be discreet since I know from personal experience that some people when hurting they prefer being alone and it is up to them to call for help.

I try to sense what it is that they need. Some careful observation will usually point the way.

I make myself available to them. I'm a great listener.Whenever they need me,I'll always be there, to help them and guide them in any way that I can.

I just let them know that i am always there for them, whether if its because they want to talk or just to hang out in silence...just ask me and im there.
