I'm looking to develop a software aplication for running on a PC. Thinking of using SQL for my database, PHP/HTML for pages but what is a good application lauguage to run the application portion? Any suggestions would be apprceiated. BTW, my background is mostly mainframe. Thanks

Well I recommend LAMP (linux, apache, mySql, php)
Since your background is mainframe I think you will find the linux os has some familiar calls. It is very stable and works well.

You can use Red Hat (Fedora) or Ubuntu. If you do the server install all the software you need will be installed.

You can do this in Windows with the windows versions (much less stable)

My personal recommendation would be Java. Its relatively easy to pick up on the fly and there are several open source editors available to help speed application development.

You will want to look into the Java SE portion of the site.
