My grandpa always said that when you can sit your bare butt on the ground for 5 minutes and it doesn't get cold, it's warm enough to plant tomatoes. I haven't tried this personally, my neighbors talk about me enough already!
I live in Zone 4 so I buy and plant seedlings around the first of May.

Hope this has hThat all depends on what part of the world you are in. Now if your in the Arctic no point they will never grow same as in the desert. But if your somewhere were it's warm and if you start them off in pots as seed's then when you see the first truss then transplant them into a larger pot. once the first truss has formed and you see little flowers appear then start feeding the plants with liquid fertilizer. Hope this helps I will have my little joke won't I. good growing.

After all danger of frost is gone for your area. Make sure to harden the plants off first too...this means taking them out during the day and bringing in at night for a few days then leaving out day and night for a few days, then plant, and water them in good once planted.

If you are starting them from seed, you should have started around mid-January in your house. If you are buying seedlings, wait until the last frost in your area before planting them and, if there is a surprise frost forecasted, cover them.
