I don't know your area, but look in the yellow pages for restaurant supply places. Call them and ask what they have in their backstock for used stuff. They usually buy from going out of business auctions and resell. I've gotten some real gems from poking around their back rooms. And also ask them if there's any restaurant auctions coming up and if there's a website for it. I got myself on a mailing list for an auctioneer that specialized in restaurant closings.

But unless you personally know the owner, do NOT go up to them and say "I hear you're going out of business, what do you have to sell?" That's not good. They'll be really offended, probably have a lot of bills that are behind, and if they don't swear at you, they'll jack the price up 1000% over what they're going to get at the auction.

Newspaper, or we have a "new and nearly new" restaurant supply place in town, you probably do as well.
Also, keep your eyes peeled for restaurants closing, ask if they are selling any equipment. GOOD LUCK!!
