I've got a Bullsnake, which is a western version of the Pine, that is now 14 years old. A snake breeder I once knew had a male red-phase Northern Pine that lived to the age of 27 and was still breeding at the age of 20, which is pretty darn old for a snake! While these Colubrid snakes don't live as long as the large Boids-the longest-lived snake on record was a Common Boa, named "Popeye", in the Brooklyn Zoo, which was euthanized due to poor health after it had been in the zoo for 40 years, and it was an adult when captured and brought to the zoo-they do tend to live longer than most mammalian pets.

All depends, it could live 20 years, if taken care of,
properly.
Though, I'm not an expert on snakes, but do watch the
discovery channel, and animal planet.
If you have a zoo in your town, or nearby, best go ask
thier peaple that work in the reptile exibit.
Or, simply ask a few pet-stores.
Also, visit a book store near by, and read up on
snakes, I'm sure there is a book store near you, that has
book's geared towards exactly the type of snake you have.
Also, some book's even have email addresses, and
addresses of places you can visit, that will enlighten you
on your son's snake.

General rule of thumb for most colubrids is about 20 years. I'm looking forward to many more years with my bullsnake, got her as a hatchling, she's 5 this year.
This is why a bit of research before purchase is a good thing, it's nice to know how long you're going to have your new pet before you buy it.
