You would need to set the network security to off if you want to use it in a place like a hotel lobby or Starbucks or an airport. If you are using Vista you would also have to change the network type from Private to Public.

I suspect you are misunderstanding the oncept of "wireless internet" it is simply a term used my the advertisers to imply cable free connection, as a laptop CAN run on batteries and CAN connect to a local network device locally, they call it "wireless internet ready" but this doesn not mean you can park in a carpark and get online.

Even if you CAN find an unssecured wireless network in range, it is technically illegal to use it without the owners permission as it comes under the heading of "Obtaining a service without intention to pay"

If you really need internet access while truly mobile (hotels etc usually offer a connection service for guests) you will need a "mobile internet access card" to plug into the laptopn. This is essentially a mobile phone for data purposes and therefore connects via a mobile network and hence incurs mobile type charges. Some providers include a monthly data allowange, which is fine for checking e-mails etc, but if you use it to it's full you will often use your months allowance in the first morning.

You can handle this through your wireless card's software. You bring up the software, then look for the wireless connections that are available, then select one. If the signal is encrypted, you won't be able to log on until you enter a password though. If you have a manual for your wi-fi card, you might want to take a look at it.
Good luck :>)))
