We recently bought a new house, and last summer, the bees were awful. Those wasps like bees that build small nests were everywhere. All over the deck, under the eves, behind the sudders. Now that the warm weather is coming, I see them flying all around the house, probably looking for good places to set up their homes. Is there anything I can do to prevent them from wanting to build around my house??

smack them on the nose with a rolled up newspaper and in a firm voice say "NO! Bad Wasps... NO! We do not build nests on my house! NO we don't!" That either works for wasps or dogs I can't remember? All kidding aside, it's not your house it's the location. The last time you removed the nest the colony probably fled in a swarm. !!! IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC HAVE SOMEONE ELSE DO THIS !!! But, in the evening to late night hours gently spray the nest down with COLD water from a hose. Try and replicate rain, not the pressure nozzle you use to clean your car. Wasps are cold blooded and will go to sleep and die if they get below a certain temperature. Those outside the nest will fly into the nest to get out of the rain. Give it a good long soaking for a good 30 minutes, what you are trying to do is suck the heat out of the nest as well. Then rush in, spray it with wasp killer (not just bug spray, real wasp killer which is designed to kill wasps) wrap and duct tape a garbage bag over it quickly and cut it off/down. If you want, have a cooler or garbage can with some foggy dry ice standing by, the cold and C02 pacifies and kills them very quickly.

Understand, there is no way to 100% guarantee that they won't be around. However, there are some methods that can help control the problem.

Caulk up every hole you can immediately, unless you're certain nest is already present (that will force the survivors into the home). Understand that they're big fans of inner-wall spaces, corners, and ceilings where they can "hang" the nest...insecticidal dusts are usually the best solution in those tiny voids, though you may need to drill a small hole to reach the nest itself.

If you do find a nest in the early summer, use an aerosol wasp/hornet spray on it in the evenings, when they're less active. It's possible to kill an entire nest in one application, but this is rare. Plan on doing this a few times, once every 3 days.

Later in the summer (after the queen has filled her colony), and you may simply have to wait until the fall to kill the wasps.

For ground-nesting insects (such as yellow jackets), pour soapy water into the entrances. Even if they make it to the entrance, the soap coats their wings, making them unable to fly. After you are certain they're dead, just cover the holes with soil.

When you see the insects, don't swat them. On some species, a crushed stinger releases a chemical that triggers and "attack" instinct, and will only invite more. Instead, use the sprays to kill it.

Another option that may grandparents swore by was to place a bowl of honey, sugar, and water near human activity. They'll attempt to land on it, only to get caught. This means that the areas that have a high "human traffic" can help remain clear. Growing up, this didn't look very effective in my eyes, but, like I said, they thought it to be very effective.

I have the same problem at my house. I haven't exactly been able to prevent it, but always have a can of wasp killer (the foaming kind) handy at all times. I find if I get the little buggers right away they dont come back.

Buy traps and place them in the areas that you do not want them to nest.
Bees and wasps are very beneficial to all gardeners, so I would take it easy on the sprays.
