They like you to. For advertisement.

I think that generally, items like the pen (embossed with the hotel's name and logo) are meant to be taken. This would also include the little post-it note pads, bar soaps, drink coasters, etc. The hotel literally pays a few pennies for those items, and the idea is for them to advertise themselves OUTSIDE the hotel.

Think about it: you're already there, you don't need to be convinced to stay there! If you take that pen with you, and maybe later on you lend it to someone, you've just given the hotel some free advertising.

There's some stuff that people traditionally steal from hotels---towels, linens, the TV---that are clearly NOT meant to be removed. If a hotels discovers that you've removed something like that, they'll add the cost to your bill.

Those things are all calculated into the cost of your hotel room... I generally leave the pens, but either take or use the shampoo and soap.

I do use the pen, while I am there, to make my lists of "things to do." But, while I think it is ok to take the pen, I generally don't.

if the pen has the logo of the hotel on it, then it is considered an advertisement and you can take it. Usually the hotel sets out paper and a pen for the use of their customers.

Pens in a hotel room usually have the name/number for their walking advertisement.SO I don't see any harm in taking it.Honestly they purchase them by the 100's that is if it is a really nice hotel.

Yeah it is but it depends on where you are taking it from Ithink they will want it if it is in the front desk. The pens are part of merchandise. It is an advertisement. If you take that pen someone you know might want to go to that hotel too.

It's really nice to have a pen when you need one. I like to leave it there for the next person.

I study hotel managment and:

if the pen is in your room it's ok to take it, actually is there for you to take it.

Yes...they expect you to. That's why they have the name of the hotel on the pen, it's free advertising. :)

lol. We always take toilet paper and pens and the little shampoo bottles too before we leave! lol.
Doesn't hurt to save a few bucks on those things. :)
And besides the hotel has millions of it! lol.
