I Just ordered a couple stamps to start Georging is it illegal for me to stamp my bills? All you Georgers where do you spend your bills? And do you stamp your bills on everything you get or Just the One Dollar Bills?

Welcome to the wonderful world of "Georging"!

First off, from Bureau of Engraving and Printing (the money-making gov't people)

http://www.bep.treas.gov/document.cfm/18/104

<>

Basically, don't stamp over security features, the seal, serial numbers, series date, or the portrait. Don't use highlighters either because over time they can darken and make things unreadable.

Please go to the Where's George site and read all the User Guidelines under the FAQ's/Help tab. ( http://www.wheresgeorge.com/rules.php ) Failure to follow the guidelines will result in suspension or banning, and nobody wants that.

Georging is a different experience for everyone. I'm a pocket Georger myself. I enter whatever turns up in my pocket no matter the denomination. Others enter only ones. Some enter only twos.

I strongly encourage you to visit the forums. There are many helpful users there that can answer any questions you may have.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

Actually you can stamp any denomination of bill. Some people stamp everything, some people just do the ones. It depends on how much you want to get involved. Some folks just handwrite the URL in the bill's margin.

The legality question gets debated a lot in the Where's George fora, but the consensus is that it is not illegal to write on money as long as it does not render the bill unreadable or unuseable. So have fun!

This is what the Wheresgeorge.com website says about that...

Where's George? does not encourage the defacement of U.S. Currency. The law defines 'illegal' defacement as defacement that renders bills unfit to be re-issued. For the legal details from the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

(They have a link for that posted, but links don't copy and paste too well)

I am a geocacher and we find lots of where's george's in our caches. There's nothing on their website about it becoming illegal, so I think it's still ok for you to stamp.

You only stamp the one dollar bills. Where's George is George Washington. Just spend them wherever you spend cash. I get a lot of them from change at fast-food drive up windows.
