I would think it quite safe to go and meet him - just make sure YOU arrange your travel and accommodation...and do not do anything that you wouldn't do at home when meeting up with a stranger.

If you are not used to travelling abroad independantly, particularly in Arab countries, perhaps you could arrange to travel around Egypt on an organised tour and book flights such that you arrive a few days early so that you can meet up with him beforehand.

Egypt is always safe to go to. Egypt is the cradle of history and the oldest culture in the world.
And by the way, I dont think that an american would say "met a Egyptian"

I recently wen on a trip to Marrakesh, all the men were polite to the European women, but the could not stop looking at them, because it is a shock to see women wandering around with their shoulders showing. While they were polite the other women were treated very differently, the Moroccan women were hardly ever outside the house. When a fried asked our tour guide why the women were not outside, he said, "why should they be"? They way women are treated is very different in the Islamic world, I don't know how well you know this man but he may act strangely. I would be more worried about you going if you were a girl in her early 20's, but you can probably make good decisions
