They don't always. It depends on the shape of the river and the water flow. Coriolis only operates on bodies of water or weather systems hundreds of miles across and does not dictate the rotation of a whirlpool.

Well i guess its what part of the world u live in. I think if your in japan it goes counter- clockwise but i think if ur in america it goes clockwise.
