Crescent is a shape of the moon when it is new, therefore reappearing after the moon's dark interval, or old, disappearing, moving toward the dark interval.
A waxing crescent simpy refers to a new moon of crescent size growing toward half, gibbous, near-full and full.
A waning crescent is exactly the same curved bow-shape but in an old moon that's declining toward the dark interval again.
The waxing gibbous refers to a moon larger than a half moon and moving toward near-full and then full.
A waning gibbous refers to a moon past full stage, larger than half, but moving toward stages of half moon, quarter moon, crescent and then its dark interval.
Waxing means increasing
Waning means decreasing.
