Choosing between Linux and Sql server 2005??
IT jobs require 3 years of experience so how do I get in??
I am between 2 choices:
Either learning Linux and try to learn as much as i can home but it might take me 2 years to be good and marketable.
Maybe less what do you guys think?

I am also considering learn SQL Server 2005 to become an assistant DBA.

But even if I have lab to practice both jobs positions
require 3 years of experience.

So my question is job wise what do you recommend me to learn ? Linux or SQL Server 2005?

And if the requirement are 3 years of experience how do I get into the field?

I am 49 so I need to get myself established soon.

Thanks.

Some I.T. jobs require 3 years' experience, but it is possible to find others that don't. Realize, though, that an entry-level position comes with an entry-level salary... an amount that might be acceptable to someone fresh out of college, but lower than you were making at whatever you were doing previously.

Do you have any I.T. background or training (other operating systems), or are your starting pretty much from scratch? If you have some I.T. background, that experience is helpful.

If you are starting from scratch, it is a pretty tough field to break into. Kids fresh out of college with "zero experience" will have several years' worth of relevant coursework/training. It is difficult to compete with that by learning in your spare time.

It's up to your choice.
If you wanna to become an pro administrator for server, you should learn Linux.
If you wanna to become a database developer, you should learn SQL server.
Maybe there's third choice for you, use Oracle on Linux? Oracle is pro database (I think it is better than SQL server) and it can be used in Linux, especially enormous database for bank which require stability, security.
