One of the most popular is Geocities. You get a free web site and all the tools you need to build your site. Owned by Yahoo. It does have an ad when your website opens but it is eacy to get rid of it.

Another one is Bravenet. It says 'free website and web tool' but I really don't know. I have seen it used fairly often but not as often as geocities.
My first choice would be Geocities.

A little more detail would be useful, but in terms of getting random internet traffic a typo of a popular website would get you a lot of hits. I cant remember how many times I have typed goggle, gooogle, goole etc instead of google into my URL bar.

yahoo geocities is free and easy to make and you can put a reasonable amount of stuff there (reasonable for a free site) I keep my resume there so when I was job hunting and met someone and didn't have my resume I could give them the web site.

How much is your credibility worth? Try to do it through your employer, university, alma mater, or professional society. Or get your own domain and get quality hosting at someplace like dreamhost.com for $8 US per month or less.
