Lap top is the name of the small computers because you can hold it on your lap.
Most come with modems and wireless cards. Plug in the modem and use it the same as your desktop.
Get a router, hook that to your DSL, use the wireless card from any room in the house, or out on the porch if you like.

I am absolutely SHOCKED, especially with SHORTY'S answer.

The very very FIRST thing you do with any computer, whether laptop or desk top is GET AN ANTI-VIRUS INSTALLED.

At a recent bigtime computer seminar, a leading Computer guru said :

When you buy a computer and take it home and plug it in you might have TEN, PERHAPS FIfTEEN MINUTES before you could become infected if you DO NOT have an anti-virus installed and running.

He went on to say that some dealers carefully explain that to customers and usually offer or (bundle as they call it) an ant-virus for a few months free. But MANY do NOT, leaving you vulnerable.

However, to-day AVG has proven so good that anyone can download it from www.grisoft.com right away, just as the techie connects the PC to the ISP line.

one suggestion is to contact your DSL provider and see if they have a wireless enable DSL modem for you. Bellsouth/the new AT&T does, and it gives me easy access anywhere in my house.
the other is to buy a wireless router from any computer retailer and go that way.
