I lowered my level of thinking to the level of my subordinate but as the manager i have to have limitations and i issued memos if needed to discipline my subordinates but they take it against me to the point they reported me to the higher ups. I cant go down to the extent of giving up to what they wanted me to do to run the office. I planned to quit my job coz i cant stand the people around me"corrupt . One thing i was hired in the office May 2005 as section chief and Dec 2005 i was designated as OIC Division Chief, this is one of the reason why my subordinate dislike me and even those section chiefs i by pass.

You can't just memo people and expect them to know what you expect. You need to communicate verbally.

People can read all sorts of nasty things into a memo. They can infer that you have a "tone" or whatever.

You should call a meeting to discuss your issues and follow-up with a memo.

Also in today's workplace nobody calls it discipline anymore, it's coaching.

You are coaching your team. The more positive you are with them, the more positive they'll be with you.

So what if they are jealous that you were promoted.

Be the better person. Be humble and gracious and you'll get more cooperation

I am surprised that you don't seem to know how to be a manager, dispite your position. You should not be needing to ask a question like this on a public forum.

When you discipline people who work for you, it is customary to bring them into your office, discuss the issue, let them explain their position BEFORE issuing your judgement.

In addition, if you want to have some respect from people, stand firm on your position and decisions. Don't be afraid of yourself being reported to the higher level managers. You just need to make sure you have reasons for your decisions and be ready to explain it. Unless, your managers don't allow you to explain your positions and just cast their judgement.

I think it is not required to quit the job but it is the time to teach them a lesson. They indeed need you to quit the job.
some things should be handled diplotimatically. It is good if you could understand their needs first. Based on their needs, you have to make them believe that you could help them out for the need.

In this process, you have to understand their weakness, later it will be used as a weapon before higer management if they revolt. Let you be a team member of them, I mean include yourself with each critical decsion they are making. It will help to develop their confidence regarding your ability.

Dont play politics among them, otherwise if they sniff that you are playing with them, it will be very difficult to handle.

For the one who need addressing...address it..
If you do it the right way you will earn respect..do it the wrong way and you come off as a pompus arrogant prick. When speaking to associates,one should A) present the problem b) ask for " HR friendly " input...allow them to tell their side off the story c) you MUST offer a solution...in steps or a single step..and then most important..FOLLOW UP!!!...and when the person has corrected the problem let them know you saw the improvment...good luck

Discipline by memo is a cop-out! It is saying that you are to afraid or intimdated to disipline them in person. Be a man, step up and do it the correct way!

If you quit the job you will prove that you are inefficient. Punishment is the last thing you have to do. There are so many other ways you have to try. It sounds that you need a good training in this field.

Maybe you aren't really management material. It's sometimes hard to accept, but it sounds like you don't really want the responsibility.
