Atoms are the smallest particle of elements, elements are some pure substances that cant be broken down into other substance by chemical combination mean. Deep inside each atom is a core called nucleus , nucleus contains particle called proton which has a positive charge and neutron which has no charge , outside the nucleus is electron which has negative charge.
Compounds are pure substances formed from chemical combination of two or more elements.
Ions are unit of measure of atom.

Okay... Atoms are the basis of all things made of matter. Air, water, the desk, you, everything. Elements are pure atoms. Pure carbon, pure oxygen, etc. Atoms are composed of protons(positive), neutrons(neutral), and electrons(negative). The protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of the atom. For your purposes, you can think of it as the sun. Electrons would be the planets orbiting the sun. We'll say that our solar system has 9 planets(we're saying Pluto is a planet!). If it's an atom that has no charge(is not an ion), it would be element 9, Fluorine. Fluorine by itself has 9 electrons, 9 protons. The charges balance out. That's all you need to concern yourself with. If fluorine were to lose an electron, its charge would change, it would become a cation, or a positive ion. It would then be +1. If fluorine gains an electron, it becomes an anion, or a negative ion. Its charge would become -1. I hope this helps. Good luck on your test.

There are a limited number of atoms (118 and all over 84 are radioactive). these atoms are the "elementary stones " of all the matter. They gather to form combination called molecules. Whereas atoms are in limited number , the number of molecules is very high as much as we can imagine.

The atoms are composed of

1) A KERNEL or NUCLEUS.
The kernel is composed of particles of two types
First PROTONS . they have an electric charge positive +1.
Their number Z is the characteristic of the atom example Z=1 is hydrogen, Z=2 is helium, Z= 8 oxygen
Second NEUTRONS their mass is near of that of the protons but they have no electric charge. Their number is equal or slightly higher that the number of protons atoms which have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons are called isotopes. All isotopes have same chemical properties

2) The electrons

The electrons are small particles mass approximately 1/1850 that of proton or neutron but have a negative electric charge -1. In the native state the number of protons is equal to the number of protons. An atom having a number of electrons different of that of protons is called an ION; If the number of electrons is greater than that of protons the ion is negative

All chemical properties are due tot he rearrangement of electrons between two or more atoms. All the chemistry is a rearrangement of electrons between different atoms.

Matter formed with only one type of atom is called element
Else it is a molecule

Protons-The amount of protons is the same as the element number. They are found in the nucleus.

Neutrons-The formula to find the amount of neutrons is mass number - atomic number. They are found in the nucleus.

Electrons-The amount of electrons is the same as the atomic number. These are located in the shells/orbits surrounding the nucleus.

These are all located in an atom.Atoms are the smallest part of matter. An atom contains a nucleus, protons, nutrons, and electrons.

Ions- These are an electrically charged atom or atom group. They acquire an electric charge by losing or gaining one or more electrons

atom- smallest unit of matter retaining its chemical properties; it has different components: the nucleus (composed of protons and neutrons) and the eletrons.
electrons- subatomic negatively charged particles orbiting the nucleus; they occupy different orbits.
protons- subatomic positively particles found within the nucleus.
in a neutral atom, the number of protons is equal to the number of electrons.
neutrons- subatomic neutral particles also found within the nucleus.
ions- these are charged atoms (positive or negative); they either gained or lost some electrons.
element- a substance in its purest form; it cannot be broken down further by chemical reactions.
compound- a pure substance that can be broken down by chemical reactions; it is either molecular or ionic in nature.

i know this is kinda short. hope this will help you. there are various websites that elaborate on this or you may look into general chemistry books.
