You do not here conservative used as a "bad word that often" but liberal used as a bad word is very common. A few weeks ago I caught at bit on NPR about this that was very interesting. Believe it or not, conservatives have gone to great lengths to demonize the word liberal. I heard one of their ex researchers talking about the studies on how they should say and use the word. It sounds like crap and a huge waist of money but they pulled it off and they will use it every chance they get.

Because it makes it easier for the other to disagree with you. They can then label you as an 'enemy' and further their goal in making you agree with their point of view.

Disagreement is good. It is what keeps both sides in check. The danger comes when we believe that everyone should agree with our own ideals.

Liberal and Conservative are completely different thoughts today than 200 years ago. Liberal thought then was freedom of speech. This way of thinking is good because it causes thought-provoking conversation. Liberal thought becomes bad when it says our leaders at home are bigger threats than those in other countries that would like to see us all dead.

not sure...(I'm speaking as a liberal democrat) what really bothers me is that most of the stuff they say about liberals is not true...it makes people look ignorant on BOTH SIDES when they bring up accusations that are completely false.

I have many Repub friends that also strongly disagree with the current administration. The current right wingers have bastardize the word conservative beyond belief. They passed conservatism long ago and are bordering on fascism.

considering liberal means :favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
I am totally in favor of reform, as well most americans should be.
conservative:disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.
they should agree with this definition, its what they do (republicans)
