I am designing a backyard fish pond for goldfish and/or Koi. The wintertime temperatures average around 26°F (-3°C) in my region. How deep will the pond have to be in order for my fish to be able to survive the winter?
I am worried about the safety of having a deep pond with children around. How can I make it safer?
Are there any other alternatives to prevent freezing without having a deep pond?
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions!

To avoid freezing solid in the wintertime, the pond will need to be at least 3 feet deep. (Although 26*F wouldn't freeze it solid anyways.) Another alternative would be to get a heater, here some some stock-tank heaters that would work just fine in a pond as well: http://www.deanbennett.com/livestock-tankheaters.htm

As far as the mosquito breeding and west nile virus is concerned, if you have fish in the pond, they will eat the mosquito babies, so that's really not something to worry about.

There are also deicers specifically made for ponds - and an outlet that turns the power to elecrtic models off when the temperature is too warm for ice to form.

About all you can do to make the pond safe for children is to have a fence (with a locking gate) around it or grid over the top of the pond that would keep kids (and fish-eating birds and larger mammals) out.

Three feet would be good for depth - koi would like as much depth as possible for more pond volume.

It is harmful to go away meals which are made with mayonnaise, corresponding to sandwiches and pasta or potato salads and so on. sitting at the counter for hours. Those meals can broaden micro organism. However, cooking with mayonnaise is flawlessly trustworthy. One of my favourite manner of cooking fish fillets like tilapia and flounder is to unfold a skinny layer of mayo at the fish and blend bread crumbs with a few parmigiana cheese; then upload a layer of the crumb blend on best of the mayo. The fish is baked in a preheated 375 measure F. oven for 20 mins.

Why make a pond at all. It will be a breeding spot for mosquitoes and you are just increasing the risk of infecting your kids with west nile virus.

Pump air to the bottom of the pond to keep it from icing over. 26F is barely enough to freeze over anyway, or empty in the winter.
