The idea in math & science is called Unity. It has only demensions measured by one. no matter how large or how small. Check out the unit circle in Trig. It makes concepts easier to understand without the confusion of demensions or huge numbers.

In most areas of mathematics we follow Archimedes' axiom [an axiom is something that is believed to be self evident, so obvious but it cannot actually be proven, as it forms the framework of rules we work with] which states that there is no largest number. For any finite number N you pick, I will just say N+1 which is bigger.

A corollary of this is that there is no number closest to zero.

I think this is more of an existentalist question than a mathematical one. If the whole of reality is One, then everything in reality is simply a fraction of the whole, therefore One is the largest number possible. No matter how many infinite varieties and variables you have within Reality, they are all simply infinite fractions of One. Is that what you meant?

I personally subscribe to the point of view that there is no highest number, that the number line goes on forever because you can always add one to any number.

One is not the highest number. The Hindu-Arabic system is infinite, as long as you can carry on.
