It took a few minutes for the question to hit me. Before me, on the ground, surrounded by a dark crimson pool of his own blood, was the man I shot. I stood there, stunned, the gun still in my hand, smoke still wafting from the barrel.
"I'm going to need your weapon." demanded the man in charge. I don't know which agancy he belonged to; I just couldn't take my eyes off the body. The body that lay there dead because of me.
I handed the pistol, grip first to the man. Well, handed isn't really the right word. I grasped the barrel in my left hand and turned it around so the the man who took possession of it could grasp it by the barrel. I just held it out and remember someone taking it from me. I overheard two of the men talking, one saying that he didn't want to hold the pistol by the grip because then his fingerprints would be on it. He was told that there was no question that I had been the one who had donethe shooting, so that fingerprint eveidence was not a priority here.
I felt a hand on my shoulder. "Hey." came the voice that belonged to the hand. "Hey, we need to go and get your statement now." Then, guiding me by the shoulder, he led me to the waiting squadcar. I know he wanted to ask me what happened, but he wouldn't. Not until I was read my rights and was down at the station. He knew the drill.
I got into the police car, and as the door closed, I was still looking at the body. The Medical Examiner's office was there now, waiting for the pictures of the scene and the body to be taken so that they could start their work. The squad car pulled away slowly and waited for the patrolmen to make a hole in the crowd big enough for the car to go through.
This was going to be one long night.

I shot the Sheriff but I did not shoot the Deputy.

Yes I am, and I'd never shoot a person, I'd stab them. I'd like to look him in the eyes as his life slipped through his fingers.

Cos he wouldnt let me buy 2 baby rats yesterday. they were so cute and I miss not having any since my Spike passed away at the start of the year.
