Back in the '60s and '70s, the term "liberal" was a very positive and enduring word. Today, after decades of very successful attacks on our language by conservative think tanks, the term has assumed a negative connotation. This was deliberately accomplished by sandwiching the work "liberal" in contexts that would let the negative feelings, such as:
radical liberal
pinko liberal
bleading heart liberal
and you can think of many more. If not, just listen to any popular talk show or for that matter, mass media. The word liberal has been under attack. On the other hand, the word "conservative" has been elevated in feeling using a similar technique in media and television shows as well. "Conservative" is put in very positive context.
The verbal war is lost on the term "liberal". There are two ways to go. First, you can substitute the word "progressive" for "liberal" and wait another 10 years or so for the media to attack this term, or you might realize the Democrats are the real "conservatives" of today. Conservatives in the sense of preserving the health of the environment, preserving the health of people, and conservatives in the sense of preserving the principles of "democracy" and "civil rights".
Those who claim to be conservatives in congress are actively changing laws, stacking the judiciary, and slowly making America insufferable to the average person who is just trying to get along.
I think that the average Democrat in congress today is a "conservative" in every sense of the word. The Republicans are "radicals" who are making America a better place for wealthy interests, but a place that is not so friendly to the average person.

You're treading on very thin ice (On the thin ice of modern life)
How about we all try to raise our rational thinking minds above that of a pre-schooler....
Why must we always 'label' someone just because they don't agree with us?
If we didn't haven't liberals and conservatives....we would have NOTHING!
Imagine having a conversation where you say something....and everyone just says 'Yep, I agree'.
Sounds pretty boring!

Liberals share a belief in individual rights, free enterprise, representative democracy, and the rule of law. In this sense, almost all Americans accept liberal ideals, so much so that it is easy to forget how revolutionary these ideals were when the American Constitution was written. Jefferson said "peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none." All of our founding fathers considered liberalism a foundation of “the grand experiment”, America. In our era, liberalism has been derided to appear weak and elitist, and, our military is used to enter entangling alliances with some. Think liberal, think BIG!

You have hit the nail on the head.
The liberal moniker has been hijacked by the socialists/communists because it has a benign sound as compared to COMMIE.
I would hope the liberals would get sick of it. I would hope the democratic party would get sick of being run amok by a very small minority, the socialists, who are in it for the control. Nothing altruistic in them.

Compared to the label "Compassionate Conservative" lately, wacko liberal doesn't have much sting left. I believe people have a right to pretty much call themselves whatever they want, as long as it doesn't stray into the graphic or obscene and as long as it isn't an obvious oxymoron. Hmmmm, might want to look at that compassionate conservative label again!

How about if we all just avoid using lame labels and discuss issues like intelligent, rational adults?
Is that even possible here?
Or is this just one big virtual mud wrestling pit?

"Rational Liberal" Isn't that about as hard to find as a "Compassionate Ex"? I don't see either. But neither do Kim Bassinger & Alec Baldwin.
