I'm taking an intro to chemistry class and we are supposed to know what Nitrates and Acetates. One example given in class is CH3CO2. How would I know what is a nitrate and what is an acetate just by looking at a formula?

Acetate is CH3CO2-, the deprotonated form of acetic acid.

Nitrate is NO3-.

Any salt having those in the formula would be classified as an acetate or a nitrate salt.

2NaCl + Pb(NO3)2 --> 2NaNO3 + PbCl2(s) Break compounds into the ions (except the solid): 2Na^+ + 2Cl^- + Pb^2+ + 2NO3^2- --> 2Na^+ + 2NO3^- + PbCl2(s) Na and NO3 cancel out since they appear on both sides of the reaction, so your net ionic equation is... [Answer: Pb^2+ + 2Cl^- ---> PbCl2(s)]
