It hardly matters what The Queen's last name is. No one is going to have the nerve to say to Her "Your full name?"
All sorts of silly answers given as ever.
Someone said that the "family" name was german - Bowes-Lyon! This of course was the family name of the Queen Mother and her ancestry is scottish!!!!
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary (named after Her mother, great grandmother and grandmother respectively) is of the House of Windsor. Strictly speaking when She married in 1947, Her name changed by convention to Mountbatten, as is the custom of females to take in convention the name of their spouse. However, being no ordinary female, The Queen on becoming Monarch reverted back to Windsor. Those not in immediate line of succession who are descendants of The Queen and Prince Phillip bear the name Windsor - Mountbatten. However, the name of the Royal House will continue to be Windsor.

Last names in the Royal family are not the same as in ordinary people. Each 'part' of the family has their own surnames depending upon the title of the head of their 'part' and this changes as their positions within the hierarchy changes. The Queen is a monarch of the Royal House of Windsor, this is not the same as being her surname.

When she was born her parents were the Duke and Duchess of York (this title is usually given to the monarch's second son which is why Prince Andrew is the present Duke of York). Because of this her name at birth was Princess Elizabeth of York. In the same way today, Prince Andrew's daughters are Princess Beatrice of York and Princess Eugenie of York. (It is interesting to note that Beatrice is in the same position that Elizabeth was in as a child. Elizabeth was never destined to be the Queen. It is only because of her uncle Edward VIII's abdication that she became the heir presumptive).

The reason why William and Harry are known as 'Wales' is the same. Their father is currently the Prince of Wales, therefore they are Prince William of Wales and Prince Harry of Wales. When Charles becomes King, William will become the Prince of Wales. The Queen's youngest son, Edward will inherit his father's title The Duke of Edinburgh upon his father's death.

It's Windsor, which means everyone living under her rule will be referred to in the future as 'the windsors', just like with the Tudors. Makes me feel like a royal!
