in stock form probably the mitsu ever so slightly above the honda and both ever so slightly above the toyota.
however if to be modified the sky is the limit on all three with only reliability concerns with stock rods on realy high output applications[ your check book will run out on you before any of these engines will]

Toyota has a great engine. But if its the 22r engine, be careful, lots of problems with this one. I had one in my 1989 Celica, and it blew on me. With the Mitsubishi Engine, also be careful because these engines are known for spinning a timing chain and cracking your engine, which in turn will make it worthless. I know this, I had a 1990 Turbo LaserRS, and it spun the timing belt and cracked my head. Engine+Cracked Head=GARBAGE. With the V-Tec I dont have much experience with Honda. But a few of my friends seem to enjoy their Hondas, no major problems....yet! So as far as performance goes, I would go with the Honda for its lack of breaking down. I think they might be a little better built. Rice Rockets. Have a good day./

1) Honda 1.6 B16A
2) Toyota AE101
3) Mitsibishi 1.6

Honda and Toyota build better engines in my book and will provide better resale and durablity. If you want to tune it, Honda offers more aftermarket options.

Honda because it has Vtec. Vtec is like a boost if you go past 5000rpm.
