1963 to 1975. In 1973, then President Richard M. Nixon signed the Treaty of Paris calling for the start of withdrawing troops from Vietnam. After JFK was killed, LBJ escalated the bombing, using the incident at Tonkin Bay as a reason. Also before 1963, Prez Eisenhower had sent advisors to Vietnam in the late 1950s. The French pulled out in 1954.

Vietnam was a French colony. When the French withdrew, Communist forces (Vietcong) supported by the Soviet Union took over the norhern part of the country. The southern part of the country, apparently, 'invited' the USA to support their struggle against Communism. Since the USA was paranoid about the spread of Communism they accepted the 'invitation'. They lost, and left in a very undignified manner.
South Vietnam came under the rule of the Communist North and now seems to be getting on quite nicely.
Some lessons are never learned. How long before we see TV footage of USA helicopters rescuing USA citizens from the Green Zone in Baghdad?

wow tough question.do you mean the U.S. role there or why it started. In short our role was as a peace keeping force sent there to qwell a civil war between the north vietnamese and the viet cong a guerilla group trying to take power.
After we were in there president Kennedy was assasinated and Johnson became president. He was like president Bush and thought he could win and restore peace but didn't count on the viet cong being in those days as fierce and terroristic as al-qaida.Anyway we were there till the fall of saigon in the early 70's when President Nixon took office and ended up evacuating our troops out of Vietnam along with alot of Vietnamese refugees. We spent 10 long years there and lost over 250,000 young men in that war.
I hope this helped you a little,as for why we stayed so long only the politicians know for sure.
