It should already be done away with. Do we need to treat women like children or are they independent souls who can formulate their own opinions and take care of themselves?

Scratch that. We just noticed from Dierdre's post that women and minorities should have their own rules and standards! Let's let everyone do that. I am a "mixed race" individual, with African, Caucasian, and American Indian genes. Does that mean I get to make MY own rules since I am partially a minority, or does the "white" in me hold this back? What about transsexuals? Do they get to make their own rules about how much they should produce to earn a certain amount of pay? How much they should do to get into a college?

This is an absolutely ludicrous concept. Standards are not going to change because different people are included. Lowering standards means lowering productivity and discouraging talent. What can the justification for this possibly be?

I guess I'll go ask a question about it.

The original standards were put in place by men for men in a male dominated world. Now that women are striving towards being included standards also need to reflect that. We have affirmative action because for a very long time women and minorities were not included and this is in place so that a certain percentage are in the workforce. Even law school entrance exams are based on the knowledge that only white, males in their mid twenties would possess, so this automatically leaves out all others. Which perpetuates the white male dominance in law, and judicial decisions, which equals law which in turn fuels social direction.
We need more substantive equality so all benefit not just white males. As far as the draft goes you have made it quite clear that you live in Germany and I don't recall there being a war their in at least 61 years. There is no draft at this time and ERA would change that so women would be eligible for the draft as well. Most feminists view this present war as wrong as do many others so this point is rather moot.

As soon as we get the ERA passed, we won't need any affirmative actions programs or the like. Want to get rid of special treatment for women, Cassius? Help us pass the ERA.

Someone has to keep the country running and make the babies WHILE men keep fighting each other. Women will never be drafted in the USA.

Women Special? Yes. WE aren't as expendable as men, if that's what you mean. Our reproductive capacities determine it as such. One man can be used to concieve many ... one woman can not repopulate the planet that quickly.

Some stroll on Sunday ... I see you prefer to Troll. Was your last account deleted for violations or do you have multiple accounts? I see this one is new.

EDIT: Most war is made by and fought by MEN. The better question is: Do men need training wheels for peace? History would say YES. It's better to start with training wheels for peace than continue to war to the point you want your mothers and daughters on the front line!!! Where does it end?

There are differences between men and women weather you like it or not. Women should be treated as women - men should be treated as men. Both genders have strong sides and weak sides - what's wrong with that?

Most of them will always want at least some special treatment, forever.

As the weaker sex, we will always need special treatment from our guys. We need to be cherished. We need alot of cuddling and encouragement. We need help lifting heavy things and opening jars. What we don't need are government programs designed to keep us from getting the kind of special treatment we need.

Immediately! Whether we admit it or not, 'special treatment' is something that women expect. Women need to earn their way in this world...as men did in order to establish our civilization. Being granted 'free passes' do not further the cause for women...it only holds them back.

Men have been responsible for the society we now live in and enjoy....and if women want to be leaders in this society, they need to contribute on an equal basis. Until then, they are merely leeching off a system that has been established in good faith!
